Difficult and traumatic life experiences can have a lasting impact on the body and nervous system. Sometimes, even when an experience is in the past, the nervous system may continue to respond as though something needs to be protected against. This can affect how we feel, move through the world, relate to others, and experience ourselves.
Through a blend of somatic and body-mind approaches, our work together invites you to slow down, become more aware of your internal experience, and develop a deeper connection with the sensations, emotions, movements, and impulses of your body. Rather than focusing only on the story of what happened, we can also explore how your experiences are showing up in the present moment.
Anxiety, depression, chronic stress, difficulty feeling motivated, chronic pain, and other emotional or physical experiences can have many contributing factors. Somatic work offers an opportunity to gently explore how these experiences may be connected with patterns of activation, protection, and regulation within the nervous system.
The body has its own language and wisdom. By learning to listen to and understand that language, you may develop greater capacity for self-regulation, resilience, presence, and connection—creating more space for choice, personal growth, and a greater sense of aliveness.
My Somatic Approach
My work is grounded in Somatic Experiencing® (SE®), developed by Peter Levine, Somatic Practice, developed by Kathy Kain, and other creative and body-oriented approaches.
Somatic Experiencing offers a way of gently exploring the nervous system's responses to overwhelming or stressful experiences. Together, we may work with sensations, movements, postures, gestures, emotions, and other aspects of your embodied experience.
Rather than forcing a response or revisiting painful experiences before you are ready, we work at a pace that supports safety, awareness, and choice. This can create opportunities to recognize patterns of activation and protection, build resilience, and support the nervous system's capacity for greater regulation.
Through this process, you may discover new ways of being with yourself and your experiences—with greater presence, connection, choice, and aliveness.
